Filing to Become a School Board Candidate |
GENERAL INFORMATION
The filing deadline for the May School Board election is the first Friday in March at 4:30 p.m. in the year of the election. The information provide below is for the Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, Colonial, and Red Clay Consolidated School Districts. Persons interested in becoming a candidate for another school district should contact the Department of Elections for their county.
SEATS UP FOR ELECTION
School Board members serve a 5-year term. One or two seats on each school board are up for election each year. An additional seat is occasionally up for election due to a vacancy. Those seats are filled by appointment by the Board of Education until the next election, and then are filled for the remainder of the term at that election. Seats up for election.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be a citizen of the United States and Delaware as well a resident of the school district in which elected.
- Must be qualified to vote in a school election in the school district where the person is a candidate at the time of the election.
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of the election.
- Must be a resident of the nominating district for the seat he or she seeks where the election is by nominating district.
PROCEDURE
- Obtain a School Board Member Filing Packet from the Department of Elections for New
Castle County or download
it from this site. - Complete the Candidate Filing Form and file it with the Department of Elections for New Castle County no later than 4:30 p.m. on the first Friday in March of the year of the election. The form must be notarized.
- Complete and submit a Certificate of Intention to the Commissioner of Elections.
- A candidate may withdraw by submitting a Withdrawal Form to the Department of Elections for New Castle County prior to the date of the election.
